Special Olympic athletes were treated to free dental screenings by ASDOH students and faculty May 1 at Mesa Community College in Mesa, Ariz., as part of the Special Olympics Special Smiles® program.

Participating ASDOH students included Heather Hearon, D2; Erik Smith, D3; Cameron Blythe, D2; Ryan Taylor, D2; Kevin Ramsey, D3; and Brian Banks, D2. Terri Hanger, CDA, RDH, M.Ed., was the faculty representative.

ASHS’ Physician Assistant program held a suture workshop June 26 where students practiced techniques on pig’s feet, which have a similar consistency to human skin.

A pediatrics workshop was held for 69 PA students June 25 on ATSU’s Arizona Campus. Students practiced physical exams on nearly 25 children of faculty and students. ASHS’ PA program holds the workshop to prepare the students for examining children when they begin their clinical rotations.

“We often practice these exams on adults (generally students practice on each other), but it’s a whole different ballgame when you are examining a child,” says Associate Program Director Laura Witte, Ph.D., PA-C.
