ATSU President Jack Magruder

The Academy of Missouri Squires today welcomed four new members to its ranks. The Academy is a non-profit organization that honors Missourians for their accomplishments on the community, state or national levels and was founded by Gov. James T. Blair in 1960.

“I congratulate these newest members of the Academy of Missouri Squires for this recognition of their many achievements on behalf of their communities and their state,” Gov. Jay Nixon said. The Governor and First Lady Georganne Wheeler Nixon hosted a luncheon of the Squires at the Governor’s Mansion today to announce the newest members.

The new members of the Academy of Missouri Squires are Frankie Freeman, Peter Herschend, Dr. Jack Magruder, and Mike Shannon.

Statistics indicate that 43 percent of Americans do not have dental insurance. In 2000, 224 United States counties had no dental providers. National Public Radio’s program Here and Now recently featured a segment on the growing concern about availability and accessibility of dental care, pointing to ATSU’s Arizona School of Dentistry & Oral Health as one of the few dental schools directly addressing this issue by teaching a community-based education model that emphasizes public health dentistry.

ATSU Missouri campus employees have made $45,830 in gifts and/or pledge commitments for the 2010 Unity Campaign (Faculty/Staff and United Way combined). Commitments for the United Way totaled $12,466 - just over the $12,000 goal.

John Thurman, OMS II, was selected to received ATSU’s Above and Beyond Humanitarian Award for his heart of compassion and service displayed during the time the tornado hit Kirksville.

The Above and Beyond Award honors a person who does a deed or an act that demonstrates special caring, compassion, or support for another person or group.

Thurman was nominated by Heather Martin, OMS I.
