Dr. Scheurer remembered

George Scheurer, DO, ’54, retired emeritus professor of internal medicine and emeritus assistant to the president for facilities at A.T. Still University’s Kirksville College of Osteopathic Medicine (ATSU-KCOM), passed away on Oct. 19, 2012, at the age of 87. He will be forever remembered for his dedication to family and friends, his community, and the advancement of osteopathic medical education.
A World War II naval veteran and 1954 graduate of KCOM, Dr. Scheurer made significant contributions to his profession, the lives of students and patients, KCOM, and the Kirksville, Mo., community. Dr. Scheurer joined the KCOM faculty in 1956 as an instructor in biochemistry and osteopathic manipulative medicine, became the director of clinical services for Community Nursing Homes, Inc., and later, became the medical director and associate administrator of the Still-Hildreth Osteopathic Hospital in Macon, Mo. Dr. Scheurer continued his administrative leadership for University facilities, overseeing nearly all new facility constructions on the Missouri campus for 30 years.
Recognized for his lifetime of service to KCOM, Dr. Scheurer was named emeritus professor of internal medicine and emeritus assistant to the president for facilities. Other University recognitions included Kirksville Osteopathic Alumni Association (KOAA) Distinguished Service Award recipient (1991), KOAA Living Tribute Award recipient (1993), and the KOAA Alumnus of the Year (2004), which is the KOAA’s highest award for outstanding service to the osteopathic profession, KCOM, and KOAA.
Dr. Scheurer provided leadership by holding office and active memberships with the Pennsylvania State University Alumni Association, Pennsylvania Osteopathic Medical Association, Northeast District Missouri Association of Osteopathic Physician and Surgeons, KCOM Alumni Association, American Osteopathic Association, American Academy of Osteopathy, and Missouri Crippled Children’s Advisory Council. The Missouri Association of Osteopathic Physicians and Surgeons recognized him as a Bronze Medallion Award recipient.
Even after his retirement, Dr. Scheurer remained actively involved with the University as a trusted facilities advisor and an advocate for osteopathic medical education.
Dr. Scheurer was preceded in death by his wife, Marretta, and is survived by his daughter, Christine, and son, Roy. Visitation will take place on Tuesday, Oct. 23, from 6-8 p.m. at Davis-Playle-Hudson-Rimer Funeral Home in Kirksville, Mo. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. on Wednesday, Oct. 24, with burial following in the Highland Park Cemetery. Family and friends are invited to attend a dinner following the services at the funeral home’s family center. Memorials are suggested to the ATSU-KCOM Scholarship Fund.
