ASDOH students and faculty participate in dental Mission of Mercy

ATSU-ASDOH faculty and students participated in the first Central Arizona Dental Society’s Mission of Mercy event held on Dec. 8. at the Veterans Memorial Coliseum in Phoenix, Ariz. Mission of Mercy is an organization dedicated to providing charitable dental care and education to Arizonans, reducing  health risks and suffering  for those in need.

“We provided basic dental care such as fillings, extractions, and cleanings,” said Amy Truong, D2, and Arizona Student Dental Association Community Service Lead Chair, who coordinated the ASDOH student involvement in the project. Limited lab work such as treatment partials were also offered. Overall more than 1,500 volunteers participated in the event.

More than 70 Mission of Mercy dental programs have been conducted across the US since 2000 to provide free dental care to local residents who otherwise would be unable to receive oral healthcare.

Twenty-three ASDOH students (five D1, 10 D2, four D3, and four D4), three ASDOH AEGD students, six ASDOH pre-dental students, 10 ASDOH faculty, and two ASDOH dental hygienists participated.  More than 1,600 individuals – adults and children – were treated.
