2017 ATSU-ASDOH alumni awards | Dr. Cheryle Singer

Cheryle Singer, DMD ’13, was honored as the 2017 Public Health Dentistry award winner at the 2017 A.T. Still University’s Arizona School of Dentistry & Oral Health (ATSU-ASDOH) alumni barbecue on Friday, Feb.17.

Dr. Singer was nominated by LaVonne Hammelman, DMD, MPH ’10, for her service to rural populations on the Navajo Reservation through Indian Health Service (IHS).

Among the reasons for nominating Dr. Singer, Dr. Hammelman listed that she is an active member of the Society of American Indian Dentists (SAID), serves a rural population, educates dental residents, provides mobile preventive services to children living in remote communities on the Reservation, and collaborates with medical providers to treat medically complex patients and patients with diabetes. Dr. Singer’s dental program utilizes a unique combination of advanced dental services for adults (such as implants and advanced surgical procedures) while maintaining a robust prevention program for children in communities across the Navajo Reservation. Access to care is facilitated through evening and early morning appointments; Dr. Singer offers evening appointments and travels with the mobile dental van. In 2015, Winslow IHS’s mobile program was formally recognized for its contributions to oral health.

The Public Health Dentistry Award honors an ATSU-ASDOH graduate who apply public health principles to effectively improve the oral health status or health literacy of a local, regional, or national population.
