Posted: May 8, 2006MESA, Ariz. (May 8, 2006 ) – A.T. Still University (ATSU) in Mesa, home of the Arizona School of Dentistry & Oral Health (ASDOH), was recently recognized by Mesa Community College with a Forging Alliances award as a health professions education partner during their award ceremony on April 27. The award recognizes partners in the community who demonstrate synergy, strength and success with Mesa Community College.
The ASDOH clinic has been the host site for Mesa Community College’s Dental Hygienist program since 2005.
The partnership between two of Mesa’s institutions of higher education benefiting public health has served as a model for other colleges and universities.
“Along with Mesa Community College we are dedicated to serving citizens of Arizona, it is great to collaborate with a Mesa college to meet these goals,” said ASDOH Dean Dr. Jack Dillenberg. “We anticipate a great future in continuing this relationship.”
ASDOH is actively concerned about public health issues and its faculty and students participate to find solutions on statewide and national levels. The school opened in 2003 and the first class will graduate May 19, 2007. A special needs clinic is currently being developed to serve children with mental and physical challenges.
In 2006, ASDOH students have already volunteered their time with:
- Two Asian Public Health Fairs in Phoenix (January & April)
- Special Needs Dentistry Training Program (February)
- Convoy of Hope in Mesa (March)
- MDA’s Stride & Ride in Tempe (April)
- Crest’s Give Kids A Smile Day (April); providing oral health services to approximately 300 children
“A.T. Still University aspires to become a community resource for health professionals, health information, and health professions educators,” says Craig Phelps, D.O., FAOASM, provost of A.T. Still University’s Mesa campus. “Being able to partner with Mesa Community College supports that vision.”
