ASHS students give free health screenings to children in need

In a combined effort, ASHS PA and Au.D. students provided free basic physical exams and hearing screenings to more than 300 children at the health fair at Golden Gate Community Center on July 25.

The health fair has become an annual event for the PA and Au.D. programs. For more than four years, both programs have attended to help serve the underserved. This year, a total of 40 students and faculty worked the event.

“The importance of this event goes beyond providing services for people who may otherwise not receive it,” said Kimberley Henderson PA ’10. “This event provides the opportunity for students to work with underserved populations and will hopefully perpetuate a future generation of benevolent healthcare providers.”

Henderson facilitated the events and plans to continue her role as liaison until she graduates in 2010. After graduation, she plans to continue volunteering at the health fair as an alumnus.

“The event was a huge success in every aspect,” said Henderson. “The community impact is significant…The patient and family gratitude is tangible. Our patients share smiles, hugs, and blessings, which motivate my fellow classmates and me to continue volunteering.”

Les Schmeltz, Au.D., assistant professor; Tabitha Parent-Buck, Au.D., department chair and associate professor; and Mike Goodwin, P.A., department chair; joined students at the event.

“Our students gain valuable experience interacting with children and their families while applying their knowledge in a very practical situation,” said Dr. Schmeltz. “This is probably one of the first hearing screenings most of these children have had, so those with hearing problems can be identified and provided whatever services they need to be able to succeed in school.”
