ATSU alumna among those honored by HearStrong Foundation

Representatives from A.T. Still University’s (ATSU) audiology program attended the 3rd annual NFL Players Association Smocks & Jocks Art Auction hosted by the HearStrong Foundation and the NFL Players Association on Saturday, Jan. 31. The HearStrong Foundation’s mission is to shatter social stigmas and radically challenge the general perception of hearing loss in society.

Kathleen Favor, AuD, ’14, was among two honorees named a HearStrong Champion. Dr. Favor was nominated by faculty of ATSU’s  AFA Balance & Hearing Institute. She was nominated for her commitment to hearing technology and the various ways it can improve an individual’s quality of life. Dr. Favor was identified with hearing loss as a child and now after earning her doctor of audiology degree from ATSU in 2014, she has dedicated her life to helping others with hearing loss. Her career path has really brought her life full circle, as she is working as and audiologist at the Hearing and Speech Center of Northern California (formerly the San Francisco Hearing and Speech Center) –where she first received audiological services as a child.   Because of its dedication to efforts to empower those with hearing loss, the AFA Balance and Hearing Institute was also named a Hear Strong Ambassador by the HearStrong Foundation.

The AFA Balance & Hearing Institute was made possible by a generous start up donation from the Audiology Foundation of America (AFA) and other supporting partners. Unlike most private practice or retail franchises, the AFA facility is part of a university teaching institution, the ATSU-Arizona School of Health Sciences. The AFA Institute offers a full range of hearing and balance care for patients of all ages.

The other HearStrong Champion honoree was Alyssa Hoglund, nominated by Gail Padish Clarin, AuD, ATSU adjunct assistant professor and rehabilitation services manager for Cardon Children’s Medical Center.  Hoglund was nominated for her passion to help others, especially children, better understand hearing loss. She recently used this passion to help create a family resource center in the library of Cardon Children’s Medical Center in Mesa, Ariz
