ATSU honors the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.

He was a visionary, a peacemaker and worked to achieve equality for all. On Wednesday, Jan. 13., ATSU celebrated Dr. King’s legacy by hosting a special event with guest speaker Keith Miller, PhD, professor, department of English, Arizona State University. Dr. Miller is the author of “Martin Luther King’s Biblical Epic: His Final, Great Speech” and “Voice of Deliverance: The Language of Martin Luther King Jr. and Its Sources.” His essays on Dr. King and other individuals involved with civil rights have appeared in many scholarly collections. In Dr. Miller’s enlightening presentation, “Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. and Unsung Pioneers of the Civil Rights Movement,” he discussed not only Dr. King but the contributions of other pioneers of the Civil Rights Movement—many of whom were women who at the time did not obtain the recognition that male leaders of the Civil Rights movement obtained. “Dr. King believed his mission and ours was to end racism, bias, poverty and sexism,” said Dr. Miller. “Through the continued efforts of many grassroots movements, the Civil Rights Act of 1964 was finally passed.” ATSU’s Director of Diversity, Clinton Normore, who facilitated the presentation, commented “the Civil Rights Movement is in direct alignment with the healthcare movement and the ATSU mission. “All of our work at ATSU may not get noticed initially, but the good outcomes will eventually be noticed.” The event, sponsored by the ATSU Diversity Department, the Cultural Competence in Education Committee, the Student National Medical Association, Missouri campus, and the Diversity Enrichment Committee, Missouri campus, was held on the ATSU Arizona campus and was live streamed to the Missouri campus. A lunch reception followed the presentation. If you missed the presentation, you can still view the video on ATSU’s archived video site.
