Dozens of athletes from across the Midwest raced in the 33rd annual Northeast Missouri Triathlon & Duathlon Sunday morning, Sept. 10.
The event, sponsored by A.T. Still University (ATSU) and officially sanctioned by USA Triathlon, was held at Thousand Hills State Park near Kirksville, Missouri. Participants came in all ages, ranging from teenagers to septuagenarians.
Triathlon participants began with a three-quarter mile swim, followed by an 18-mile bike ride and a five-mile run. Those in the duathlon ran for two miles, completed an 18-mile bike ride, then ran for another five miles.
More than 100 volunteers were on hand to assist race director Dan Martin, MA, in the day’s events. Martin also serves as director of ATSU’s wellness programs at the Morris Thompson Campus Center in Kirksville, a position he has held since the facility opened in 1982.
Overall, 84 athletes participated in the triathlon, with gold, silver, and bronze medals awarded to the top three male and female finishers.
