ATSU remembers Natalie Beissel

A candlelight memorial in her honor was held on the Arizona campus Sat., Oct. 24. Attendees included Beissel’s parents, her brother and sister-in-law, classmates, faculty, staff, and friends. Beissel was doing her clinical rotation at the El Rio Community Health Center campus (CHC) in Tucson, Ariz., one of 12 ATSU community campuses nationwide. El Rio medical directors, Dr. Chris Dixon and Dr. Ray Wagner, opened the ceremony by reading a memorial plaque honoring Beissel. The plaque is now on display in the El Rio CHC classroom.

At the memorial, Beissel’s brother Nick read the eulogy that he gave at Beissel’s funeral in Lakeville, Minn. ATSU counselor Art Matthews led a moment of silence followed by the candlelight ceremony and concluding with an invocation by SOMA faculty member Dr. Lorree Ratto. Beissel’s Tucson classmates, faculty, and parents wore special t-shirts with a butterfly honoring their friend and daughter.

The Natalie Beissel Scholarship fund has been established by her family as a tribute to her. This award honors her dedication to the study of the human body and passion for caring for others. The scholarship provides financial assistance for a third- or fourth-year SOMA student.

Contributions to the scholarship fund can be made to: A.T. Still University, c/o University Advancement, 5850 East Still Circle, Mesa, Ariz., 85206 or by visiting www.atsu.edu/nataliebeissel. ATSU is a 501(c)3 non-profit organization.
