ATSU-UNICEF taps in to world needs
Posted: April 3, 2009The United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) works to overcome the obstacles that poverty, violence, disease, and discrimination place in a child’s path. This year, the students of ATSU-UNICEF at KCOM are working double time to see that mission accomplished.
As part of World Water Week, held March 22-28, ATSU-UNICEF approached Kirksville restaurant owners to participate in UNICEF’s national Tap Project Initiative. Restaurant patrons were asked to donate $1 to support clean water initiatives in communities lacking access to safe drinking water. ATSU-UNICEF’s efforts have raised approximately $500.
To raise additional money, ATSU-UNICEF compiled an international cookbook with diverse student and faculty recipes. Cookbooks cost $10 and can be purchased at http://atsuunicef.googlepages.com/home. Every 50 cookbooks sold will provide enough donations to purchase a water pump for communities with no access to safe drinking water.
“We are very excited about this project,” said ATSU-UNICEF President Jennifer Hicks, OMS II. “We’re projecting that we will sell well more than 100 cookbooks. Everyone can impact one of the most preventable and tragic causes of childhood deaths in the world today.”
