Dream BIG

Planning and assessment committees prepare ATSU for the future

When ATSU President Jack Magruder addressed the university community in his spring Still Magazine letter, he encouraged everyone to dream a big future for our 116-year-old institution, setting the stage for a period of planning spearheaded by the University Strategic Planning Committee (USPC) and the University Wide Assessment Committee (UWAC).

“Together, we will move into a bright and productive future,” he said. “With one vision, one plan, one unified institution.”

Since spring, both committees have focused on that goal. At its July 14 meeting, the USPC began to develop a refined mission statement as well as vision and core values statements.

“The refined mission statement will highlight ATSU’s purposes and priorities as it moves into the second decade of the 21st century,” said Steering Committee Co-Chair Michael A. McManis, Ph.D., vice president for planning and assessment at ATSU. “Presently, ATSU does not have a formal vision statement or a formal statement of core institutional values that has been reviewed, discussed, and adopted by the University community. The USPC intends to address this void by developing a vision statement that succinctly outlines our collective hopes and dreams for ATSU for at least the next decade.”

The UWAC has formed three subcommittees that will look at ideal outcomes for all ATSU graduates, infrastructure and communications, and data gathering and analysis. At its September 14-15 meeting, subcommittees reported their progress. “The planning process is both exciting and challenging, and we look forward to working with people across the university in helping us refine and implement our university-wide assessment,” said Committee Chair and ASHS Associate Dean David Wayne, Ph.D.
