Arizona School of Dentistry & Oral Health

Faculty and alumna published in JADA

Jae Hyun Park, D.M.D., M.S.D., M.S., Ph.D., director of the ASDOH postgraduate orthodontic program, and Marisela Bedoya, D.M.D., D.H.Sc., ’07, were jointly published in the December issue of the Journal of the American Dental Association. Their article, “A Review of the Diagnosis and Management of Impacted Maxillary Canines,” was included in the monthly journal as a continuing education article.

Sauers named NATA Fellow

Eric Sauers, Ph.D., ATC, chair, Department of Interdisciplinary Health Sciences, has been named a Fellow of the National Athletic Trainers’ Association. This distinction recognizes professional achievement in research and/or education, combined with service to the profession. Only the most accomplished scholars in the athletic training profession earn this distinction and are allowed to use the prestigious designation of “FNATA.”

Dr. Sauers is one of only 22 NATA Fellows; NATA has a membership of more than 25,000.

PA faculty published

Laura M. Gunder, D.H.Sc., PA-C, PA assistant professor, published “Rapid flu testing” in the November issue of Clinician Reviews/Convenient Care and “Laboratory evaluation of thyroid function testing” in the December issue of The Clinical Advisor.

Dr. Gunder also now serves as adjunct professor for the Doctor of Health Sciences program.

Audiology faculty appointed to board

Audiology Assistant Professor Les Schmeltz, Au.D., was
recently appointed to the Educational Audiology Association
(EAA) Board of Directors as a director-at-large through 2011. The
EAA is an international organization of audiologists and related
professionals who deliver a full spectrum of hearing services to all
children, particularly those in educational settings.

“During my term, I hope to represent the interests of Au.D.
training programs and the students in those programs,” Dr.
Schmeltz said. “By making EAA the go-to resource for students, I
hope to encourage more students to get involved in educational audiology as a career choice.”

Carlson published

C George Carlson, Ph.D., professor, physiology, published “Determination of hydroxyproline content as a measure of fibrosis in nondystrophic and dystrophic skeletal muscle” in Treat-NMD.

KCOM faculty named certified Item Writers

Neal Chamberlain, Ph.D., associate professor of microbiology & immunology, and Neil J. Sargentini,
Ph.D.
, chair and associate professor of
microbiology & immunology, recently
received the title “Certified Item-Writer”
for Comprehensive Osteopathic Medical
Licensure Examination of the United
States (COMLEX-USA) examinations.

Drs. Chamberlain and Sargentini
successfully completed the itemwriting training course overseen by the National Board of Osteopathic Medical Examiners (NBOME), which is a not-for-profit corporation that serves public and state licensing agencies by administering examinations testing the medical knowledge of those who seek to serve the public as osteopathic physicians.

Faculty promoted

Three faculty members at ATSU-KCOM have been promoted from assistant professor to associate professor: Lary Ciesemier, D.O., ’97, Internal Medicine; Patricia Sexton, D.H.Ed., M.S., Family Medicine, Community Medicine, Preventive Medicine; and Kelly Halma, D.O., Osteopathic Manipulative Medicine.
