Former ATSU professor publishes history of Kirksville Country Club

KIRKSVILLE, Mo. (Apr. 18, 2007) – As the popularity of golf grew nationwide in the early 1920s, its growth was also mirrored in north Missouri. Frank Colton, Ed.D., former ATSU faculty member and administrator, chronicles the rise of golf and the establishment of the Kirksville Country Club in his book A History of the Kirksville Country Club.

Dr. Colton distilled his history of the club using old club meeting minutes, past Kirksville Daily Express articles, and interviews with residents who were there. He chronicles the debate surrounding the location of the club in the city, the parallels between golf’s national popularity and club growth in cities in northern Missouri, the 1959 fire that destroyed the first clubhouse, and the development of the golf association that arranged intercity matches.

“The club celebrated its 85th anniversary last year,” Dr. Colton said. “The growth of the Kirksville community and the establishment of the country club from 1921 to now is an interesting perspective that I think the reader will enjoy as much as I did.”
