In Memoriam

ATSU pays tribute to the following graduates

Jean Kenney
1917-2010

Jean Elizabeth Hedden Kenney, of Yarmouth, Maine, died after a brief illness on April 7. A graduate of West Virginia Wesleyan College, Kenney moved to Kirksville in 1963 when her husband, Richard Kenney, D.O., joined the faculty of ATSUKCOM. Kenney soon began keeping records and cataloging artifacts at the initiation of the Still National Osteopathic Museum (Museum of Osteopathic Medicine). She continued her service to the museum for more than 25 years.

Her high standards, attention to detail, and knowledge of osteopathic history were legendary. A memorial service was held in Kirksville in July. Her son, Richard G. Kenney, is a 1979 graduate of ATSU-KCOM.

Lewis D. Elliston, D.O., ’37
1914-2010

Lewis D. Elliston, D.O., ’37, of Covington, Tenn., died April 17, 2010. Dr. Elliston was a family practice physician and general surgeon in Tipton County, Tenn., from 1937 until his retirement in 1996 at 82. He continued serving as the county medical examiner until age 91.

During his first year of medical school at ATSU-KCOM, Dr. Elliston lost his father in a train accident and needed a way to pay for his education. An accomplished clarinetist, he directed an orchestra and also picked up cadavers and delivered them to the medical school.

Dr. Elliston was active in the American Osteopathic Association and the Tennessee Osteopathic Medical Association and served on several medical licensing boards. He delivered more than 4,000 babies in Tipton County, including 128 sets of twins. A community leader and philanthropist who was known for his colorful stories, Dr. Elliston loved being an oldtime country doctor.

1912-2010

Former ATSU-KCOM professor Delbert E. Maddox, D.O., ’55, of Kirksville, died March 28 in Peoria, Ariz., at age 97.

In March 1942, he enlisted in the U.S. Navy ‘s Tunney Physical Fitness program. He served 19 months of sea duty and three and a half years in the U.S. Navy before being discharged as a lieutenant in September 1945.

In Fall 1945, Dr. Maddox accepted a teaching position at Northeast Missouri State Teachers College (Truman State University) and became chair of the Department of Physical Education and athletic director.

After six years of teaching, he decided to enter the Kirksville College of Osteopathic Medicine and after graduation taught at the college for 30 years.

He led the Department of General Practice in 1956 and served in that capacity until retiring in 1986.
