Local professor and science teacher receive Sigma Xi awards

KIRKSVILLE, Mo. (Apr. 25, 2009) – The mission of Sigma Xi is to further the scientific enterprise, in part by making science accessible to the general public. The Kirksville Sigma Xi chapter held its annual banquet on April 16, followed by an address by nationally known climatologist from Rutgers University, Dr. Alan Robock, on nuclear winter.

At the ceremony, Jennifer Nothdurft, a 16-year veteran science teacher from Kirksville R-III High School, received the Outstanding Science Teacher of Year Award from Chapter President Robert Baer, Ph.D. Also at the ceremony, Vineet Singh, Ph.D., associate professor of microbiology at A.T. Still University-Kirksville College of Osteopathic Medicine (ATSU-KCOM), received the chapter’s Researcher of the Year Award.

New members were initiated at the ceremony. Initiates included Hyun-Joo Kim, associate professor of statistics, Truman State University; Deshala Castille, KCOM Biomedical Sciences program; Brian Draper, OMS II; Jason Losee, KCOM Biomedical Sciences program; Deborah Miller, student, Truman State University; Valerie Nguyen, KCOM Biomedical Sciences program; Nastassia Richardson, KCOM Biomedical Sciences program; Tyler Smith KCOM Biomedical Sciences program; Kuldeep Singh, KCOM Biomedical Sciences program; Christine Wilson, KCOM Biomedical Sciences program; and Jonathan Parker, OMS III.
