NIH data management and sharing policy

December 4, 2020
Posted In: AT Still Library News, AT Still Memorial Library

A final version for the National Institute for Health (NIH) Policy for Data Management and Sharing was released on Oct. 29, 2020. This policy will go into effect on Jan. 25, 2023. The purpose of the policy is to “promote the management and sharing of scientific data generated from NIH-funded or conducted research.” Data management and sharing plans are now required with NIH research. Required elements of the plan are outlined in the NOT-OD-21-014 Supplemental Information. There are also supplements for allowable costs for a data management plan, and selecting a repository for data resulting from NIH supported research. For more information on the final policy, read the statement from NIH Director Dr. Francis Collins.

Development of this policy began in 2015, with a plan to increase access to publications and data funded by the NIH. Feedback was collected from the community to develop a data sharing policy, with public comment in 2016. Additional feedback was collected in 2018 for proposed key provisions for future NIH policy for data management and sharing plans. A draft of the final policy was released in 2019.

For assistance on starting a data management plan (DMP), contact the library or visit the library’s Data Services Guide to learn the necessary elements of a DMP and helpful resources on getting started.
