Record attendance at annual Tucson alumni, students, and friends reception

ATSU alumni, students, and friends from the Tucson, Ariz., region gathered to reconnect with University leadership and each other. Updates were given by Dr. Don Altman, dean of College of Graduate Health Studies (CGHS); Dr. Randy Danielsen, dean of Arizona School of Health Sciences (ASHS); Dr. Klud Razoky, associate dean of Arizona School of Dentistry & Oral Health (ASDOH); and Dr. Ray Wagner, regional director of medical education for School of Osteopathic Medicine in Arizona (SOMA). Below is a summary of updates:

• CGHS continues to grow its online programs with students and graduates worldwide. The newest addition will be the Master of Science in School Health Education program, which prepares K-12 educators to further advance the health of their students and their schools’ performance.

• ASHS is celebrating its 20th anniversary this year, which was kicked off with an on-campus celebration in January when 200 students, alumni, employees, and friends enjoyed tours, presentations, lunch, and family activities. The newest program to be added to ASHS is the entry-level Doctorate of Occupational Therapy, whose first class will begin in 2016.

• ASDOH continues to serve as an uplifting force in the community by providing care and education to underserved communities. This semester, ASDOH’s 10th Give Kids A Smile event treated 469 children for free – a national record. The Text2Floss program will be utilized by the Chilean government to help raise awareness about the importance of oral health.

• The Missouri School of Dentistry & Oral Health (MOSDOH) is completing its dental clinic in St. Louis this summer, and the first class of students will be starting their clinical work at the dental clinic shortly after the June 10 ribbon-cutting event.

• SOMA continues to be a leader in innovative medical education. Not only do students begin clinical work in their second year, but the advanced technology implemented for numerous aspects of their curriculum have developed their skills to learn in various environments. Additionally, the grand opening celebration of our newest community campus in Chicago will be held on August 28.

• The Kirksville College of Osteopathic Medicine (KCOM) has most recently developed the top ultrasound curriculum of any osteopathic school, with only two or three allopathic schools having comparable programs. The fellows at KCOM have also developed an elective OMM course for our MOSDOH students, forming bridges between medicine and dentistry and expanding students’ understanding of their healthcare partners.
