Founder’s Day 2013 extended

Evening with the Stars

Both the Arizona and Missouri campuses celebrated ATSU’s 121-year heritage with family, friends, food, and fun during this year’s Founder’s Day events. Arizona held its daylong event Oct. 18, and Missouri held activities the following week, Oct. 24-26. With so much happening each year at Founder’s Day, Still Magazine is bringing a few tidbits online for your enjoyment.

Overheard at Founder’s Day

“Osteopathic physicians are the best kept secret in medicine in America. I think it’s time for a change.”

– Kenneth Lossing, DO, ’84, at the Tinning Lecture

“Dr. Still’s passion for learning and the desire to find a better way to provide care to his patients, led to the founding of our profession. We are grateful to him and to all those who have come before us.”

– Margaret Wilson, DO, ’82, at the A.T. Still Honorary Ceremony

“I really enjoy celebrating this day as a student and honoring such a great man and a wonderful institution.”

– Nasim Seisan, AuD, ’15, at Arizona’s fall festival

CE program

ATSU Continuing Education held its annual Founder’s Day program, “Founding Principles and Future Directions in Osteopathy,” which offered an update for healthcare professionals wishing to expand their knowledge and integrate osteopathic techniques and the use of ultrasound into patient care. Approximately 110 physicians from across the nation and beyond attended the program.

The program’s annual “Evening with the Stars” provided more than 100 KCOM medical students the opportunity to interact with practicing clinicians attending the course.

Guest speakers for this year’s luncheon series included Charles Grim, DDS; Gloria Grim, MD; and George Blue Spruce, DDS. Dr. Blue Spruce spoke of a man who mentored him as a child before a bicycle derby, who said he was rooting for him.

“They were calling him doctor, and I was flabbergasted that his man, who was in charge of everything, believed in me when I was chubby and had low self-esteem. I said to my folks, ‘I want to be like Dr. Renfro, and he’s a dentist.’ He invited me to his office, and I was sold. I wanted to become a dentist.”

Founder’s Day run

Runners and walkers participated in the Founder’s Day 5k run/1.5 mile walk Oct. 26, hosted by the Thompson Campus Center. Whitney Rolling won the 5k overall women’s division with a time of 20:41, and Tony Wang won the 5k overall men’s division with a time of 17:33.

KCOM class spotlight

Members of the KCOM classes of 1963 and 1988 were honored for 50 years and 25 years of service, respectively. Still Magazine caught up with a few classmates to find out their favorite KCOM memories and what has changed at the School since graduating.

“One of my favorite memories was from my first day of class. I had a histology professor who would start off each class with a joke.”

– Jack Ackerman, DO, ’88

“Everything has changed about KCOM; it’s amazingly different and progressive.”

– Robert Barnes, DO, ’63
