Sundt Foundation provides pain relief for children

Francisco Martinez’s four children now think twice before they splurge on candy. They are all too familiar with the problems of bad cavities.

Francisco, 9, Michael, 8, Mathew, 7, and Alexandra, 5, are each receiving free dental care at the Arizona School of Dentistry & Oral Health (ASDOH) Dental Clinic in Mesa, Ariz., thanks to a generous $2,500 donation from the Sundt Foundation.

The Sundt Foundation grant provides oral healthcare services for 10 disadvantaged children from the greater Phoenix metro area.

“I tried taking them to a private dentist but could not afford it, and my other plan was to take them to Mexico for treatment,” said Mr. Martinez, a machine shop worker. “The care we’ve received at the clinic has been extremely helpful, the children do not complain about pain.”

The children used to consume candy and sugary drinks which led to cavities, frequent infections, and toothaches. Today, they have a good understanding of oral hygiene and brush their teeth twice a day.

The Martinez family has also curbed their intake of sugary foods and soda. Mr. Martinez says, “When they attend birthday parties, the kids know that they need to leave the candy bags there and not bring them home.”

The Sundt Foundation focuses on the needs of disadvantaged children and adults and receives most of its funding through employee contributions, which are matched by the company.
