ATSU Media Specialist and freelance graphic designer and artist Jamie Carroll is one of the lucky few – he gets paid to do what he loves.

During the day, he works on a variety of projects for ATSU, including posters, medical illustrations, university signage, and a variety of graphics to support student groups, faculty, and staff.

“The creative work I do at ATSU and while freelancing has a mutual benefit to one another,” he says. “I am able to learn new skills with my freelance projects and apply those techniques at work and vice-versa. In addition to creating photo illustrations, I also contribute illustrations and photos to iStockPhoto.com. I enjoy this because I can choose what I want to create, and other designers can license my work for their design projects.”

Whether it’s illustration, digital art, photography or graphic design, Carroll’s motivating factor is “creative freedom, doing something I choose, and improving on the skills involved in the process.”

His work is proof that practice does indeed make perfect. In Summer 2009, he participated in and won the fourth annual iStockPhoto Battle Royale tournament and Photoshop competition, which included a $5,000 first prize. Nearly 120 designers entered the tournament, which matched 32 qualifying designers against each other in a series of digital art battles. The photo illustrations featured here are from that competition.

Carroll uses Photoshop and a Wacom tablet to create photo illustrations. See more of his work at JamieCarrollLLC.com and view timelapse videos of his photo illustrations at YouTube.com/JamieCarrollLLC.
