Scott Savage, D.O., ’87, co-edited a book of poetry published by Tellico Books entitled “Bleeding Hearts.”
This poem describes what it feels like for a spacewalker to go outside of the vehicle – called an EVA – for the first time.
EVA 1
The hatch opens to the speckled snow
of Orion and lo
of Andromeda and Auriga
above the ivory and azure swirls glowing in the distance.
Here, there is
no war, no peace
no sound, no time
no hate, no love
no heat, no horizon.
Here, for years of miles,
there is only the veil of the unknown
draped across the heavens.
