New members named to Board of Trustees

Bertha A. Thomas, BPhil
City: Kirksville, Mo.
Education: Wayne State University
Background: Bertha Thomas retired from Truman State University in 2014 as assistant dean for multicultural affairs where she supported students by providing academic and personal advisement and coordinated programs focused on diversity, inclusion, and equity issues. She has served on the Missouri Martin Luther King Jr. Celebration Commission since 1999, instituted the annual MLK Day of Service for Kirksville and northeast Missouri, and has more than 20 years of experience initiating and developing educational programs for children, adolescents, and adults. A partial list includes designing cultural competence programs, establishing peer mentoring and academic advising programs for students of color, staging montage and unity productions to explore multiculturalism, and coordinating Asian American, Hispanic, Black, and Indigenous Peoples Heritage Month observances.

Education: Howard University and Strayer University
Rosie Allen-Herring is president and CEO of United Way of the National Capital Area in Washington, D.C. She has more than 25 years of experience in the areas of strategic leadership, public and private partnership development, corporate philanthropy, and community investment. She has been honored by many organizations including Washingtonian Magazine’s Most Powerful Women (2015 and 2013), Washington Business Journal’s Power 100 Most Influential Business Leader (2015, 2014, and 2013), Washington Business Journal’s Minority Business Leader (2015), Washington Business Journal’s Women Who Mean Business Award (2011), and SMART CEO Award (2014). In addition, she was selected as an international fellow by the United States-Southern Africa Centres for Leadership and Public Values at the University of Cape Town (South Africa) Graduate School of Business and Duke University Graduate School of Public Policy.
