East valley residents had the opportunity to receive free health screenings and services when A.T. Still University (ATSU) and Chandler CARE Center hosted the fourth annual Free Community Health & Wellness Day at the Chandler CARE Center on Saturday, Feb. 19 in Chandler, Ariz.

Services included general medical exams, hearing and vision screenings, oral health exams, balance assessments, and vital health recordings.  All services were provided by ATSU students and supervised by faculty from ATSU’s Arizona School of Dentistry & Oral Health (ASDOH), Arizona School of Health Sciences (ASHS), and School of Osteopathic Medicine in Arizona (SOMA).

“More than 200 ATSU students from seven programs were provided the opportunity to reach out and provide services and health information to over 150 community members,” said Beth Poppre, assistant vice president for student affairs. “Despite Mother Nature being less than cooperative with the event, the students provided a wonderful health fair for this underserved population of Chandler. I’m so proud of how dedicated our students are to this outreach project.  They represent the spirit of ATSU,” said Poppre.

SOMA and physician assistant students provided medical exams to 70 individuals.  ASDOH students provided oral hygiene instruction for 100 people, dental screenings for 98 patients, fluoride varnish to 88 patients, and made 11 sports mouth guards.

“After months of planning for this event, there was an incredible sense of satisfaction to see smiling students providing services for patients at the Free Community Health & Wellness Day,” said Jared Ross, OMS I.  “Interacting with the families reminds all of us why we chose to pursue this profession — to help people and to impact people’s lives.”
