SOMA professor receives Excellence in Osteopathic Education Award

Frederic Schwartz, D.O., FACOFP, associate dean for community campuses, and professor, family and community medicine, ATSU’s School of Osteopathic Medicine in Arizona (SOMA), is the 2011 recipient of the Arizona Osteopathic Medical Association’s (AOMA) Excellence in Osteopathic Medical Education Award.  The award honors a physician or non-physician who has contributed significantly to the advancement of osteopathic medical education in Arizona.

Dr. Schwartz was the founding chair of community medicine at the University of New England’s New England College of Osteopathic Medicine. He has served as vice-president of Midwestern University and as chair of family medicine at the Chicago College of Osteopathic Medicine and the Arizona College of Osteopathic Medicine. He is a fellow of the American College of Osteopathic Family Practitioners. Dr. Schwartz has also served as principal investigator for many Health Resources and Services Administration-funded projects in education and research.

“Dr. Schwartz was selected for this award because he is a superb educator that has national impact,” said Amanda Weaver, executive director, AOMA. “He has extensive grant-writing experience with successful outcomes and has made considerable efforts to enhance osteopathic medical education in Arizona.  He is well-deserving of this honor.”
